Self-driving startup Cruise raises $2 75 billion from Walmart, others

Cruise recently began testing its fully driverless vehicles in San Francisco for the first time, but the company still doesn’t allow non-employees to ride in its vehicles. Cruise had planned to launch a commercial taxi service in 2019 but failed to do so, and it has yet to publicly commit to a new date. Voyage is a spinoff from Udacity, an online learning service that offers courses in driverless technology.

"Another excellent @Cruise ride. From a hotel to a grocery store and back to the hotel - fully autonomously. If you think the future is not here yet, you’re just yet to try it. Long autonomy. P.S. Tweeting this from an AV."

Cruises from Florida

Cruise's relationship with Walmart includes a trial delivery service in Scottsdale, Arizona, announced in November. When asked a hypothetical question about public operations beginning within the next two to three years, Ammann said that "sounds reasonable to me."

Discover visionary venues, like the Magic Carpet on our Edge-series ships, and the picturesque Lawn Club, a serene space with half an acre of real grass. Wherever you choose to sail, you’ll enjoy a restful and reinvigorating vacation you won’t soon forget. Escape the winter chill and head off to an Eastern Caribbean cruise from Fort Lauderdale.

This week’s wheels

The new operating window already extends its total active time by 1.5 hours as compared to the free driverless test pilot service it was offering between June of last year and the debut of this paid service. Meanwhile, Waymo officially launched paid rides in Los Angeles this week. We previously reported on California regulators’ approval of the Alphabet-owned company to charge for its robotaxi service in the city. The service is starting out small and will build based on demand and performance metrics, a Waymo spokesperson told TechCrunch. It was another wild week in the world of transportation, particularly in the EV startup and automated driving industries.

Visit pink flamingos in Aruba and don’t leave Curacao without sampling the island’s famous blue liqueur. Lyft and Uber said they will pause on their planned exit from Minneapolis after city officials decided to delay the start of a driver pay raise by a couple of months. Tesla dropped the monthly subscription price of its “Supervised FSD” (formerly known as “FSD Beta”) to $99, down from $199, in a bid to get more dollars and data from drivers.

The policeperson walks toward the car and attempts unsuccessfully to open the driver-side door, at which point the Cruise vehicle begins to drive down the road — only to pull over again and activate its hazards. Police approach the car a second time in a presumed effort to figure out how to turn on the headlights. Commercializing autonomous vehicles has been far more challenging than many predicted even a few years ago. The challenges have led to a consolidation in the autonomous vehicle sector after years of enthusiasm touting the technology as the next multitrillion-dollar market for transportation companies. When you embark on a cruise from Florida with Celebrity, you’ll experience the perfect tropical getaway, both onboard and off.

What’s inside the car

We work closely with the SFPD on how to interact with our vehicles, including a dedicated phone number for them to call in situations like this. "Cruise is executing a global strategy with the right partners," said Grayson Brulte, president at consultancy Brulte & Co. "At the end of the day it will come down to who can cut the best deals which long-term generate revenue and profits." In January, the San Francisco-based startup said Microsoft Corp would join General Motors, Japan's Honda Motor Co Ltd and institutional investors for a combined new equity investment of over $2 billion. Sensors can see 360 degrees, hundreds of feet ahead, and around that double-parked car. Cruise cars make sense of this data in a split second, tracking every important object in view. Learn the basics of how a Cruise car navigates city streets safely and efficiently.

Cameron headed the startup’s open-source self-driving project before launching his own venture. Sebastian Thrun, Udacity’s chairman and one of the founders of Google’s self-driving car project, was briefly chairman of Voyage before a conflict forced him to step down. The company operates a fleet of self-driving cars in two retirement communities, one near San Jose, California, and the other north of Orlando, Florida, both called The Villages. But Voyage doesn’t want to be seen as the exclusive AV service for senior citizens. Cruise in 2019 began testing computer vision and sound detection AI to help its cars respond to emergency vehicles.

In 2017, Cruise was conducting testing on public roads with Cruise AVs in San Francisco, Scottsdale, Arizona, and the metropolitan Detroit area. Even self-driving cars trained to obey traffic laws are bound to run into issues that cause them to commit a citable offense. Such was the case with a Cruise-operated hatchback in San Francisco last weekend, which was pulled over by local law enforcement for failing to switch on its headlights. While the car came to a stop, as video of the incident shows, there’s policy to be established when it comes to interactions between autonomous vehicles and police. Cruise was expected to launch a ride-hailing service for the public in San Francisco in 2019. It has been operating an employee ride-hailing service with a current fleet of autonomous vehicles in San Francisco for several years.

Yoshi Mobility, a Nashville-based startup that developed an app to offer drivers preventative maintenance, virtual vehicle inspections and electric vehicle charging, raised $26 million in a Series C round led by General Motors Ventures. Bridgestone Americas, Universal Motors Agencies and Shikra Limited also participated. Cruise's current test fleet is composed of hundreds of custom Chevrolet Bolt EVs equipped with driverless technology. Ammann said that fleet, which it plans to launch operations with, will continue to expand until the Origin goes into production. The Origin is the company's first vehicle specifically designed to operate without a driver on board. We’re reintroducing a small fleet of manually-operated vehicles to begin mapping with trained safety drivers behind the wheel.

Cruise cars consider multiple paths per second, constantly choosing the best ones for unexpected events and changes in road conditions. Cruise ridehail services are not available at this time, but you can join the waitlist to be one of the first. The convenient departure port of Tampa Bay is a fantastic city well-worth exploring before embarking on a Caribbean cruise. Make your way through the Y-Bor City district, where you can shop in one of its many cigar shops and sample craft beers at a local brewery. Stop by the Florida Aquarium, where you can pet stingrays and watch dolphins on a catamaran cruise. Or start your vacation early and head to a Gulf Coast beach and dip your toes in sugary-soft sand and crystal clear water.

While Orlando is best known for the thrills of its spectacular theme parks, there’s much more to this arty, energetic city, which encompasses long, tree-lined avenues, serene lakes, world-class museums, and an inventive culinary scene. Sail through one of the world’s most impressive feats of engineering during a cruise down the Panama Canal. Experience the thrill of watching the canal’s complex system of locks open and close as you cross from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific. Along the way, stop in tropical destinations in the Caribbean and Central and South America, including Puntarenas, Costa Rica, Cabo San Lucas in Mexico, and Cartagena, Colombia.

Admire the eclectic architecture and diverse culture of Miami during a tour around the city. Take photos in front of the pastel buildings in the Art Deco Historic District, taste the delicious cuisine of Little Havana, and marvel at the beautiful shores and music-filled bars of South Beach. Head to one of Florida’s top attractions, the Everglades National Park, which is famous for its swampy terrain and local wildlife, particularly the alligators. Go on a boat ride around the area and then visit an alligator farm, where you’ll learn more about these unique reptiles.

HysetCo SAS, a startup that rents hydrogen-powered EVs to taxi drivers in Paris, raised nearly €200 million ($218 million) in a round led by Hy24. Cruise is certainly one of the best capitalized autonomous vehicle companies in the world. In 2018, it secured both a $2.25 billion investment from the SoftBank Vision Fund and a $2 billion investment from Honda. In 2019, Cruise landed a $1.15 billion investment from GM, SoftBank, Honda, and T.
